Celin Georgescu was blocked from running in the elections.
Supporters of pro-Russian Georgescu gathered outside the CEC building and reacted aggressively to the decision, with clashes breaking out with police.
Romania’s CEC has denied registration to pro-Russian candidate Celin Georgescu, despite the Constitutional Court’s decision. Digi24 reported on Sunday, March 9.
The elections are set to take place in May.
As noted, supporters of the candidate who were in front of the CEC headquarters started rioting, and police intervention was required.
Georgescu, meanwhile, said that the decision “is a continuation of the coup d’état committed on December 6.”
Georgescu is known for his openly pro-Russian views. The politician openly denies Ukraine’s right to exist and advocates for the so-called “great Romanian territories”.
Let us recall that in November, pro-Russian far-right politician Calin Georgescu won the first round of the presidential election in Romania.
The Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the results of the first round of the presidential election. The reason for the annulment of the results was the interference of the Russian Federation and cyberattacks. Subsequently, Georgescu finally lost the court case, in which he demanded to resume the election procedure and organize a second round.
The repeat presidential elections will be held in the second half of May.
